Howdy fit friends!  Do you ever get hangry after a hard workout?  I often find myself needing some after exercise fuel in order to make it to my next meal, but it can be confusing trying to decide on something that’s satisfying AND won’t undo all your hard exercise efforts.  I always recommend my clients to…

(1) HYDRATE (no matter how short or long their workout session was)

AND

(2) EAT A CARBOHYDRATE-RICH + PROTEIN-RICH SNACK (ideally within an hour after hitting it hard)

We all lose fluids and electrolytes when we workout (even in the winter) so be sure to sip on your favorite low or no-calorie beverage before, during and definitely after a sweat session.

After you move your muscles, your body needs to restock on it’s favorite fuel source, carbohydrates.  Remember that carbohydrates can be found in nearly all your food groups — fruits, veggies, plant-proteins, grains and dairy products — so the possibilities are endless!

Pairing your carbohydrate-rich food with a protein-rich food will also help repair your muscles after the stress of exercising them.  I love grabbing a pre-made parfait for the perfect mix of nutrients after I exercise.  Simply layer…

  • sliced or diced fruit (for carbohydrates)
  • your favorite non-fat plain or vanilla yogurt (for carbohydrates AND protein)
  • low-fat granola (for carbohydrates AND protein)

(NOTE: You can purchase these components in single servings (or make your own!) so you can just throw it together once you’re ready to eat or pre-pack your parfait in a travel-safe container to take to-go.)
