It’s gettin’ hot out therre! And that means cold treats are ALWAYS a good idea 🙂 Luckily, smoothies can be a cool, healthful way to beat the heat! The key to Slimmer Smoothies that aren’t laden with sugar & fat lies in your ingredient choices. This is my basic Slimmer Smoothie recipe & there are endless ways to make it just how you like it!
- Light Liquid Base [ 1/2 cup | 40 calories ]
— Examples of this would be Skim Milk, Unsweetened Almond Milk, Light Soy Milk, or Unsweetened Coconut Milk. - Unsweetened Frozen Fruit [ 1 cup | 120 calories ]
— Not with sugar! - Protein Powder [ 1 scoop | 75 calories ]
- Non-Fat Yogurt [ ~5 ounces | 80 calories ]
— Plain or vanilla flavored yogurts are very versatile & Greek yogurt has extra protein! - Ice [ 1/2 cup | 0 calories ] Total Calories = 315
If you’re feeling adventurous you might even add in some veggies – carrots, kale, spinach, & cucumber are popular mix-ins. If you want to kick up your smoothies’ nutrition another notch try oatmeal, flaxseeds, chia seeds, or spices & extracts for added flavor & nutrients. (Greatist has some seriously great ideas for any occasion.)
I tend to add my wet ingredients into the blender first before taking the whole thing for a spin. In the end I always get a no-fail, satisfyingly slim smoothie that’s the perfect texture.
Happy National Dairy Month my peeps! What Slimmer Smoothie combo will you create?
